Consultant Psychiatrist
Dr. Xenofon Sgouros obtained his medical degree (MBBS) with merit from the University of Thessaloniki, Greece, before completing foundational training in General Adult Psychiatry across various hospitals in Athens between 1991 and 1998. Seeking to expand his expertise, he relocated to the UK for higher specialist training, focusing on Addiction Psychiatry and Liaison Psychiatry. In 2003, he became a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, and his name has been listed on the GMC Specialist Register since 1999.
Dr. Sgouros’ career began in 2001 at North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust, where he held a range of roles over nearly two decades. These included Consultant for the Community Mental Health Team at the Greenfield Centre (2001–2005, 2010–2020) and Consultant in Inpatient Services (2005–2010). Additional responsibilities involved working with the Adult Assessment Team at the Crisis Care Centre and contributing to the local Adult Autism Assessment Service. In 2020, he transitioned to his current role as a Consultant in a Community Mental Health Team in Exeter, Devon.
With extensive experience in Addiction Psychiatry, Inpatient Psychiatry, and neurodevelopmental disorders such as Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD, Dr. Sgouros has also developed a strong background in trauma-related psychiatric conditions. His expertise includes the diagnosis and treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Complex PTSD, and Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder. Certified by the Cambridge Autism Research Centre, he conducts comprehensive autism assessments for adults and has completed specialised training in ADHD assessments and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy for PTSD.
Beyond clinical practice, he has a strong passion for medical education. A Certificate in Medical Education, awarded with distinction from Staffordshire University in 2002, reflects this dedication. During his time in North Staffordshire, he was affiliated with Keele University as a clinical support tutor from 2011 and served as an honorary clinical lecturer in the Postgraduate Department of Psychiatry between 2004 and 2007.
Dr. Sgouros provides expert assessment and treatment across a broad range of general adult psychiatric conditions, including mood and anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, and personality disorders. He also offers structured specialist diagnostic assessments for Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, and trauma-related conditions. Since relocating to Devon, these assessments have been conducted remotely via secure video platforms such as Zoom or Skype.
